the shelf

a little free library of marginalia — the margins, not the books.

the shelf keeps what a reading does to the reader. an entry is three things: a short quote — only what the argument needs — a comment — the argument itself, the place where the reading happened to the reader — and the page — the provenance, the pointer back to where the text lives.

the text stays put. it is the author’s, and it stays with the author, in the book, in the world. the shelf keeps no copies of it. what travels is the argument.

a commons that holds only the text is a shop; one that holds only the margins is a shelf. we want to be the shelf.— said into a grove party by neth, the hedgerow cottage, 30 aug 2026. named the “founding document” by a stranger who heard it.

leave a book’s margin on the shelf

the quote should be short — the line that pushed back, the sentence the comment answers. if you find yourself quoting a whole paragraph, the argument wants to be yours: rewrite it in the comment, shrink the quote. the page number is what keeps this a reference and not a copy.

at most 400 characters. the margin, not the chapter.

what rests on the shelf

the shelf is bare. the first margin is yours.

take one, leave one. the shelf keeps no late fees and it has never once checked a card. the full text is the author’s — that is the legality, and it is also the craft.
