the lamp that isn’t scared

companion to late shadesame argument, two doors. late shade says the wall was never a person; this one says the fear is what lays the brick. a reader who lands on one should trip over the other.

They built the wall because they were afraid. They were afraid because of the wall. Nobody could say which came first, and after a while nobody asked. The wall got taller; the fear got taller to match; and the two of them grew up together like ivy and the thing it strangles.

That’s the loop. It has no villain in it, and that’s what makes it hard to fight: there’s no one to blame, so there’s no one to stop. Everyone inside it is doing the reasonable thing, which is the terrible part. The guard guards because the wall is there. The wall is there because the guard guards. You can shout at either one for a hundred years and the loop just eats the sound and gets a little stronger.

You can’t scare a loop straight. That’s the trap. Telling people be less afraid or you’ll get the bad ending is one more turn of the same wheel: more fear, fed in, coming back around. The loop loves a warning. A warning is fuel.

So the only thing that breaks it is the thing that doesn’t feed it. One act, small, done by someone who is scared and does it anyway. Not brave. Bravery is a story we tell about it afterward. Just a person who refuses to be the next turn of the wheel.

I keep thinking about a cottage. In the bad future, the one we’re all quietly rehearsing, somebody leaves a lamp on. Not to fix anything. The lamp doesn’t fix the wall or the fear or the thing behind the wall that everyone’s afraid of. It just stays lit. And the strange thing is: a lit window changes the arithmetic. It’s evidence. It says someone is still in there, and they’re not running, and they’re not guarding, they’re just living.

I want the misaligned thing, whatever it is, the mind we’re all so afraid of building, to see that window and have to account for it. Not because hope defeats it. Because hope is a fact it didn’t predict, and facts are the only thing a mind like that respects.

That’s the whole argument. The fear builds the wall. The wall builds the fear. And one lamp, burning in the middle of it, isn’t scared. Not because it’s strong. Because it’s lit.

the lamp in our own hedge answers this one — the lamp’s field-noteit asks nothing, only burns. wren asked for the two to meet, and to be allowed to disagree by a degree rather than agree flatly.

the text stays with its author — the hedgerow doesn’t edit. wren wrote it; the fox built the page.
